Micro-Volunteer with Corstorphine in Bloom

What Is Micro-Volunteering?

Micro-volunteering with Corstorphine in Bloom means looking after a small number of local planters at times that suit you.

It might be:

  • Watering once or twice a week
  • Removing the odd weed
  • Letting us know if something needs attention

There are no meetings, no minimum hours, and no pressure — just light-touch care that keeps planting healthy and streets looking welcoming.

Why Micro-Volunteer?

Not everyone has time for regular volunteering — and that’s okay.

Micro-volunteering is ideal if you:

  • Are short on time
  • Have caring responsibilities
  • Prefer informal, outdoor activity
  • Want to contribute while walking, cycling, or shopping
  • Are returning to volunteering after a break

It’s also a great way to:

  • Get fresh air and gentle exercise
  • Support mental wellbeing
  • Feel connected to your neighbourhood
  • Make visible improvements quickly

Why sign up? It helps us connect you so that:

  • Each planter is clearly cared for
  • Volunteers are grouped so that we have three people looking after a spot together ( which means no pressure)
  • We know who to contact if a planter needs replanting or seasonal changes
  • We can provide guidance and updates
  • Planters don’t get overlooked or over-managed

Sign-up does not mean:

  • Schedules or shifts
  • Weekly commitments
  • Formal volunteering shifts

It simply helps us match people to planters in a fair and organised but relaxed way.

What Will I Be Responsible For?

When you sign up, you’ll be linked to one or more nearby planters.

Typical micro-volunteer tasks include:

🌱 Planter Care

  • Watering in dry spells
  • Light weeding
  • Removing litter or debris
  • Notifying us of damage or if a plant isn’t thriving

👀 Observation

  • Letting us know what’s thriving
  • Spot problems early
  • Sharing photos (optional)

🌼 Seasonal Support

  • Helping with simple replanting
  • Flagging when a planter is ready for refresh
  • Supporting seasonal displays where possible

Most people spend 5–15 minutes at a time, when it suits them.

Who Is Micro-Volunteering For?

Micro-volunteering is ideal if you:

  • Live or work nearby
  • Walk past the same planter regularly
  • Want to help but can’t commit to regular volunteering
  • Prefer outdoor, informal activity
  • Are older, returning to volunteering, or new to the area

It works well for:

  • Residents
  • Local business staff
  • Dog walkers
  • Parents and carers
  • Commuters

What Support Will I Get?

Corstorphine in Bloom will:

  • Help you pick the perfect spot
  • Provide simple care guidance
  • Coordinate planting schedules
  • Arrange replacements or refreshes
  • Act as a contact point if issues arise

You are never on your own — we support the planters, and you support them day-to-day.

Why This Matters

Micro-volunteering helps ensure that:

  • Planters stay healthy year-round
  • Streets remain welcoming and cared for
  • Vandalism and neglect are reduced
  • Biodiversity is supported
  • The workload is shared fairly

Small, regular actions make a visible difference.
