You must confirm your public liability insurance covers volunteers working at your premises. If the planter is elsewhere in Corstorphine, we will ensure there is insurance.

Planter Specifications

The design uses a locally sourced, durable, floor-standing trough measuring 100 x 50 x 70 cm tall.  An alternative might be the whisky barrel type. Many different planter types are available.

Key Planting

Each planter utilises a “Thriller-Filler-Spiller” layout of 9 plants selected for hardiness in Edinburgh’s climate.

  • Thriller/Focal: Lavandula angustifolia (Lavender) for aromatic scent and Jasminum officinale (Common Jasmine) for sweet fragrance.
  • Filler (Visual/Tactile): Stachys byzantina (Lamb’s Ear) for velvety touch, and Platycodon grandiflorus (Balloon Flower) for visual interest.
  • Spiller (Trailing): Thymus serpyllum (Creeping Thyme), Bidens ferulifolia (Golden Bidens), Heuchera ‘Chocolate Ruffles’ (Coral Bells), and Bacopa cordata (White Bacopa) to create high-contrast visual boundaries.

Maintenance & Watering

Due to heat reflecting off the concrete pavement of St John’s Road, these planters require diligent care to maintain their display.

  • Watering: Requires 8 to 12 litres per application, 2 to 3 times per week, increasing to daily watering during summer heatwaves. This is 2 watering cans full.
  • Feeding: A high-potash liquid feed (e.g., tomato food) is required weekly to sustain flowering.
  • Stewardship: Corstorphine in Bloom volunteers provide ongoing support, including seasonal refreshes and structural safety audits, to reduce the operational burden on your team.
